In South Africa (SA), the AbaThembu Royal Council says it plans to contact the Nigerian Consulate following reports that a Nigerian national was crowned as a king in the Eastern Cape.
The development comes after videos circulated online showing a ceremony in East London, where an individual was referred to as “Igwe Ndigbo Na East London.”
The Royal House of AbaThembu has rejected claims that King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo supported or recognised the title.
Senior royal advisor Advocate Mathew Mpahlwa said the incident is being taken seriously, adding that it misrepresents traditional leadership in the province. He stressed that no one can claim kingship in a community where they have no cultural or historical link, and called on authorities to step in.
The African Transformation Movement has also criticised the reported coronation and is calling for an investigation.
The council says it will seek answers from Nigerian authorities as concerns continue to grow over the legitimacy of the ceremony.
