The African Union (AU) has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the United Nations to help resolve Sudan’s ongoing conflict, as diplomatic efforts intensify to secure a ceasefire and revive a political transition.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf made the remarks during a meeting in Ethiopia with Pekka Haavisto, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan.
Youssouf stressed the need for sustained engagement with Sudan’s stakeholders, underscoring that any political solution must be Sudanese-led and inclusive of all parties.
Both leaders highlighted the urgency of an immediate ceasefire, describing it as a critical first step towards a credible and lasting political process. They also called for closer co-ordination of mediation efforts, with the AU taking a leading role in aligning regional and international initiatives.
The discussions come amid continued violence in Sudan, with mounting pressure on rival factions to de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue.
Youssouf and Haavisto urged all parties in Khartoum to engage constructively, warning that only an inclusive political settlement can restore constitutional order and stability in the country.
