South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADG) has urged greater public awareness of Bipolar Disorder to help break down persistent stigma surrounding the condition.
The call comes as the world marks World Bipolar Day, with advocates highlighting the impact of extreme mood swings associated with the disorder, including unpredictable manic and depressive episodes.
SADAG KwaZulu-Natal call centre Supervisor Anne Rajcoomar says stigma can leave those affected feeling isolated and lacking confidence. She explains that the unpredictability of the condition often leads to misunderstanding, with people being labelled in ways that can be harmful.
Rajcoomar warns that this can contribute to serious mental health risks, including suicidal thoughts, stressing the importance of support, understanding, and early intervention to prevent individuals from acting on these feelings.
