Scenes of disorder broke out at public hearings on Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Amendment Bill in Harare

Scenes of disorder broke out at public hearings on Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Amendment Bill in Harare, where crowds blocked critics from accessing the microphone.

Opposition figures and human rights lawyers, including Tendai Biti, Lovemore Madhuku, Fadzai Mahere and David Coltart, had gone to make submissions. Coltart was reportedly manhandled and had his mobile phone stolen, while the others escaped without injury.

Earlier in the session, speakers, including prominent members of the ruling ZANU-PF politburo, voiced support for the proposed amendments.
