The military in Mali has pushed back against reports that it released around 200 suspected jihadists in March in exchange for easing attacks on fuel convoys, a move that would have significant implications for the country’s struggling economy.
Army Spokesperson Souleymane Dembélé dismissed the claims, describing them as misleading and intended to erode public trust in state institutions.
But the denial has not settled the matter. Multiple sources continue to cast doubt on the official version, suggesting there may be more behind the scenes.
Political analyst Keita Idrissa says the situation reflects deeper tensions. “When information is contested like this, it often points to a gap between what is being communicated publicly and what may be happening on the ground,” he notes, adding that transparency will be key to maintaining public confidence.
