Mozambique has fully settled its debt of more than $514 million to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), marking a rare milestone at a time when many countries remain heavily indebted.
The repayment comes as Maputo enters fresh talks with the IMF for a new support programme, following the suspension of the previous one in 2025.
Mozambican Economist Salvador Raisse says the move carries both symbolic and practical weight. “Clearing this debt strengthens Mozambique’s credibility with international lenders, but it also raises expectations around discipline going forward,” he explains.
Raisse adds that while the repayment offers breathing room, the real test will lie in how the country navigates future borrowing and implements reforms to support long-term stability.
