Spain’s goalless friendly against Egypt on was marred by racist and Islamophobic chants from sections of the crowd at the RCDE Stadium.
Authorities in Spain have opened an investigation after offensive remarks were heard during the first half. A message was displayed on stadium screens at half-time urging supporters to refrain from xenophobic behavior, and it was repeated early in the second half, drawing a mixed reaction from the stands.
Spain winger Lamine Yamal described the chants as “disrespectful and unacceptable,” after making his 26th appearance for the national side. The 18-year-old was part of the squad that won the European Championship in 2024.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation has also condemned the anti-Muslim chants, stressing the need for respect and inclusivity in the game.
