South Africa’s (SA) International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola has held consultations with several counterparts in the Gulf region amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
In a message posted on X, Lamola said he also spoke with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who raised concerns over the rising civilian death toll and the worsening humanitarian situation in the region.
Lamola reiterated that SA maintains that diplomacy remains the only viable path towards resolving the conflict.
Meanwhile, China’s Ambassador to SA Wu Peng outlined a joint five-point initiative by China and Pakistan aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and broader Middle East. He was speaking at the launch of the SINO-SA Media Club in Pretoria.
According to Wu, the initiative can be summarised in three key steps: cease hostilities, engage in dialogue, and ensure stability in the region.
