SA consumers warned about the growing dangers of illicit alcohol

The Drinks Federation of South Africa (SA) has warned consumers about the growing dangers of illicit alcohol, particularly during the Easter period.

The federation says counterfeit and fake alcohol may contain harmful substances such as methanol and industrial chemicals, posing serious health risks. Consumers are being urged to buy alcohol only from reputable outlets.

Head of Research at the federation, Dr Shamal Ramesar, says illicit alcohol falls into four main categories: counterfeit products, smuggled or trafficked alcohol, tax fraud, and unregulated home brews or traditional alcohol.

He has urged consumers to remain vigilant by checking product quality and ensuring purchases are made through trusted retailers to avoid potential harm.
