SA Cross-Border Road Transport Agency has called for safer travel during the Easter long weekend

South Africa’s (SA) Cross-Border Road Transport Agency has called for safer travel during the Easter long weekend, as millions of motorists head towards neighbouring countries.

The agency says it is increasing law enforcement presence along major routes to border posts, aiming to manage rising traffic volumes and ensure compliance with road traffic regulations. SA shares borders with Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

The busiest land route is the N1 highway leading to the Beitbridge Border Post, which handles high volumes of commercial traffic and more than 300 000 travellers during festive seasons.

Heightened enforcement follows a call by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy for stricter monitoring of overloading, vehicle roadworthiness and illegal operations.

The agency emphasised that safer roads require cooperation from all road users, including drivers and pedestrians, to help reduce accidents and fatalities during the Easter period and beyond.
