Former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, currently serving as the African Union (AU) High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, has arrived in Juba, South Sudan, for a three-day mission aimed at advancing inclusive political dialogue and fostering lasting peace.
Kikwete was appointed March 24, 2026, by the AU Chairperson as a special envoy for South Sudan under the AU’s Ad Hoc High-Level Committee on South Sudan.
The committee is mandated to support the implementation of the 2018 Revitalised Peace Agreement.
His visit is expected to encourage co-operation among political leaders, promote national dialogue, and assist the country in progressing toward sustainable peace and credible elections.
He is scheduled to meet with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir this Thursday.
