AU Commission Chairperson meets German Chancellor to deepen Africa–Germany partnership

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, was hosted on Tuesday by H.E. Friedrich Merz, Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin, signalling renewed momentum in Africa–Germany relations.

 

The high‑level talks focused on strengthening the AU–Germany strategic partnership, with both sides underscoring the importance of closer cooperation on peace and security, regional integration, renewable energy and broader Africa–Europe engagement.

 

Youssouf expressed appreciation for Germany’s consistent and principled engagement with Africa, particularly within the frameworks of AU–Germany and AU–European Union cooperation. He highlighted Germany’s role as a reliable partner in advancing Africa’s development priorities and supporting multilateral solutions.

 

Merz reaffirmed that Africa remains a key partner for Germany and Europe, stressing that the continent’s development is central to shared global prosperity, stability and security. He noted that deeper collaboration with the AU is essential in addressing global challenges ranging from climate change and energy transition to conflict prevention and economic resilience.
