SA test key ahead of WAFCON

Algeria women’s national team head coach Farid Benstiti says their narrow defeat to South Africa’s (SA) Banyana Banyana has highlighted the importance of facing strong opposition as they prepare for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco (WAFCON).

A first-half goal from Nthabiseng Majiya secured a 1-0 win for SA at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.

Benstiti said the match was a valuable learning experience for his side, particularly against a well-organised team.

“For me it was the first game against SA and it was exciting. It’s very important for us to play teams that are very well organised and have an intelligent coach. That’s how we become competitive,” he said.

He added that fixtures of this nature are crucial as Algeria looks to build a stronger and more resilient squad ahead of the continental tournament.
