The African Union (AU) Commission and the government of South Africa (SA) will convene the fifth session of the Specialised Technical Committee on Transport and Energy from April 27 to 30 2026 in Johannesburg.
The high-level ministerial meeting is expected to focus on accelerating Africa’s infrastructure development agenda, with emphasis on transport systems, energy integration and regional connectivity.
Ahead of the session, AU Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Lerato Mataboge, said the agenda has been designed to strengthen alignment between Member States and speed up implementation of priority projects.
She stressed the need for Africa to strengthen ownership of its development path and focus on infrastructure that delivers measurable economic impact.
The meeting will build on progress made since the 2023 session in Zanzibar, including advances in regional corridors such as the Abidjan–Lagos Highway and growing efforts to expand electricity access across the continent.
It is also expected to consider frameworks linked to cross-border infrastructure investment, governance reforms and climate finance mobilisation, as Africa seeks to deepen integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The session will also include the election of a new bureau to guide the committee’s work for the next term.
