South Africa’s (SA) Regional Court in KuGompo City in the Eastern Cape Province has granted opposition leader the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema leave to appeal his sentence.
Malema was earlier today sentenced to five years direct imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm and two years for possession of ammunition.
The sentences were to run concurrently. Magistrate Twanet Olivier delivered the judgment.
The charges ranges from unlawful possession of a firearm, five years’ imprisonment.
Unlawful possession of ammunition two years’ imprisonment.
Discharging a firearm in a built-up area and public space, fined $1 220 (R20 000) or six months imprisonment
Reckless endangerment of people or property fined $1 220 (R20 000) or six months imprisonment.
Failure to take reasonable precautions to avoid danger to person or property, Malema and his former security guide Adriaan Snyman fined $1 220 (R20 000) or six months imprisonment.
