Uganda’s Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde has warned of a possible legal and political confrontation over proposals to extend political terms from five to seven years.
Ssemakadde, speaking on behalf of the Uganda Law Society, said the plans, emerging from discussions within the ruling National Resistance Movement, are not grounded in public demand and risk undermining constitutional principles.
“They are not arising from the grassroot, there is no immediate pressing concern for the extension of the terms of leaders,” he said.
He also pointed to past court rulings that rejected similar proposals, arguing that elected leaders cannot unilaterally change the terms of their mandate without broader public participation.
The Law Society says it is ready to challenge any such move through the courts and through co-ordinated political action, warning that the proposals could strain Uganda’s democratic framework.
