Zambia has confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease

Zambia has confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in seven districts of Western Province, prompting immediate restrictions on livestock movement.

Principal Director of Veterinary Services in the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Charles Maseka, says laboratory tests have verified the presence of the disease.

Authorities have since moved to contain the spread by banning the movement of cloven-hoofed animals and related products into and out of the affected areas.

Maseka says the government has also dispatched 35 000 vaccine doses, with vaccination efforts already underway in some districts as part of a broader containment strategy.
