Over twenty women have benefitted from breast reduction surgery in South Africa’s (SA) Mthatha in the Eastern Cape Province.

The initiative is a partnership between the Doctor Viwe Nogaga Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital and involved a team of volunteer surgeons and anaesthetists from across the country.

Nogaga says the project seeks to address a significant backlog of patients requiring breast reduction surgery. O

Nogaga Foundation Doctor Viwe Nogaga: “There are quite a number of ladies who are suffering in silence who do not have funds, who do not have access to do the process of breast reductions and also, they are getting overtaken in the public sector by other issues like cancers and other problems of trauma. So, I find it necessary because this is also restoring confidence, restoring quality of life and functions of these ladies.”Twenty women underwent the breast reduction procedure.

For these women, the breast reduction surgery is a game changer.

Experts say women with heavy breasts face many challenges including health complications.
