The strait, which handles a significant share of global oil and gas shipments, is a lifeline for energy‑importing countries. As instability grows, the economic impact is already being felt far beyond the Middle East, particularly in developing nations that depend heavily on imported fuel and food.

In Lao People’s Democratic Republic, fuel prices have almost doubled in some regions, driving up transport costs and pushing household food prices higher. Families are reportedly skipping meals or switching to cheaper, less nutritious food to cope with rising living costs.

Nigeria has also been hit hard. Since February, fuel prices have risen by more than 60%, doubling transport costs and feeding into higher food prices. The surge is deepening pressure on households in a country where many people already struggle to afford basic goods and services.

In Egypt, inflationary pressures are intensifying. Vegetable prices have nearly tripled in some markets, while staple foods are up by around 18%. Fuel and transport costs have also risen sharply, adding to the burden on consumers.

Small island developing states in the Caribbean are facing added strain as higher freight and fuel costs push up already expensive food imports. These price shocks are placing pressure on fragile economies that rely heavily on tourism and external trade.

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, a fragile 10‑day ceasefire with Israel continues to hold. Thousands of displaced residents have begun returning to the country’s south, despite widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure. However, the security situation remains tense.

Over the weekend, a UN peacekeeper was killed in southern Lebanon. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) held a memorial ceremony for Sergeant‑Chef Florian Montorio, a French peacekeeper who died in the line of duty. Initial assessments indicate the fatal fire reportedly came from Hezbollah.
