The latest report by Amnesty International has raised fresh concern over the state of human rights in parts of Africa

The latest report by Amnesty International has raised fresh concern over the state of human rights in parts of Africa, with Angola and Mozambique singled out for serious violations.

The report points to a pattern of arbitrary arrests, heavy-handed crackdowns on protests and civilian deaths linked to the actions of security forces. It comes at a time when both countries are facing growing social and political pressure.

Legal expert Jaime Domingos says the findings are deeply worrying, noting that they reflect a broader erosion of civil liberties. “What we are seeing is not isolated incidents, but a pattern that suggests shrinking democratic space and increasing intolerance of dissent,” he said.

Domingos, who is also Co-co-ordinator of the Movimento Cívico Mudei, warned that without stronger accountability mechanisms, such trends could worsen. “If there is no transparency and consequences for abuses, it becomes very difficult to rebuild public trust in institutions,” he added.
