Senegal’s former President Macky Sall is among four candidates being interviewed for the UN top post

Senegal’s former President Macky Sall is among four candidates being interviewed for the United Nations’ (UN) top post, as the process to choose the next secretary-general gathers pace.

He is the only African in the running to succeed António Guterres, whose term comes to an end later this year. The UN has begun formal interviews, known as interactive dialogues, where candidates present their vision and answer questions from member states.

Sall faces competition from Costa Rican diplomat Rebeca Grynspan, Argentine Nuclear Agency Chief Rafael Grossi, and former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.

His candidacy has been put forward by Burundi, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the African Union.
