Mozambican civil society organisations are calling for urgent compensation

Mozambican civil society organisations are calling for urgent compensation, justice and reparations for victims of the deadly anti-government protests that rocked the country in October 2024.

Groups including the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) and Amnesty International say accountability is needed for those affected by what they describe as excessive use of force during the unrest.

According to reports cited by the organisations, about 400 people were killed during the protests, while others suffered serious injuries allegedly linked to police action.

The calls form part of a broader push for an inclusive national dialogue aimed at rebuilding trust and promoting reconciliation following the country’s 2024 general elections.

The organisations argue that addressing the violence and its aftermath is essential for long-term stability and meaningful peacebuilding in Mozambique.
