United States (US) President Donald Trump says he will extend the ceasefire with Iran ‘until such time their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded’.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether Iran or Israel, Washington’s ally in the nearly two-month war, would accept the proposal.
In a statement posted on social media, Trump says the US had agreed to a request from Pakistan mediators to suspend planned strikes on Iran.
Yet even as he announced a ceasefire extension, Trump says the US Navy would maintain its maritime blockade on Iran’s trade routes, a move Tehran regards as an act of war.
Early reaction from Tehran suggested deep scepticism.
