South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola on precautionary suspension pending the finalisation of a case he is facing.

Ramaphosa says he has appointed Puleng Dimpane as the Acting National Police Commissioner.

He was addressing the media from the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Masemola faces four charges relating to the contravention of the Public Finances Management Act.

This relates to the contract awarded to Cat Matlala’s Medicare24.

Ramaphosa says Dimpane has extensive experience. “To ensure stability and continuity in the South African Police Force (SAPS), I’ve appointed Lieutenant General Dimpane as the acting National Commissioner of Police. Lieutenant General Dimpane is currently the divisional commissioner for financial management services of the SAPS and has a long and distinguished career, both in the SAPS and in other public institutions. Having been in the police service for close to two decades she has extensive experience in policing, strategic management and financial management and governance.
