Goosen triumphs at PGA Tour Champions event

South Africa’s  (SA) two-time major champion, Retief Goosen, won the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour Champions Mitsubishi Electric Classic on Sunday at Sugarloaf, United States.

His victory came 24 years after he captured the PGA Tour’s BellSouth Classic on the course.

Goosen closed with a 14-point round under the modified Stableford scoring system to beat Stephen Ames of Canada by two points.

It was the 57-year-old Golf Hall of Famer’s fifth victory in 150 starts on the senior tour.

Goosen birdied the par-5 18th to finish with 39 points.

He also won the PGA Tour’s 2005 International under the scoring system that was used for the first time in a senior event this weekend.

Players received eight points for an albatross, five for an eagle and two for a birdie.

They lost a point for a bogey and three for a double bogey or worse.
