South Africa’s (SA) Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Yousseff has criticised the chaotic scenes that unfolded before the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, on Sunday.
A physical altercation reportedly broke out during pre-match warm-ups in the Chiefs’ half after Pirates security personnel allegedly tried to stop Chiefs officials from carrying out a traditional pre-match ritual on the pitch. The situation quickly escalated, spilling into the tunnel area and prompting police intervention.
The disruption forced Kaizer Chiefs players to abandon their warm-up and return to the dressing room for safety.
Ben Yousseff said he was disappointed by what unfolded ahead of such a high-profile fixture, adding that incidents of this nature have no place in South African football. He later shifted focus to his team’s performance, noting areas for improvement as they prepare for their next match.
