Anger is growing in Tanzania after conflicting figures emerged over the number of people killed during last year’s election-related violence.
A government-appointed commission has put the death toll at just over 500. But opposition parties and human rights groups say the true number could be closer to 1 000, raising serious questions about the credibility of the findings.
The report has been widely rejected by opposition leaders, who argue it lacks transparency and fails to fully address the role of security forces in the crackdown that followed the polls.
According to Kenyan journalist Dennis Beru, the gap between official figures and independent estimates is likely to keep tensions high.
“There are already questions about credibility, and this report is not closing the debate, it is reopening it,” he said.
