Plans to expand air links between Mozambique and Ethiopia, including more flights to Beira and a proposed new route to Nacala, have emerged

Plans to expand air links between Mozambique and Ethiopia, including more flights to Beira and a proposed new route to Nacala, have emerged as a key outcome of talks between President Daniel Chapo and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The discussions, held in Addis Ababa, also focused on strengthening economic and security cooperation, as both countries look to deepen bilateral ties.

Mozambique used the visit to position itself as an attractive investment destination, highlighting opportunities in natural gas, agriculture, mining and trade. Meetings with business leaders formed part of the engagement, aimed at drawing greater African investment into the country.

National carrier Ethiopian Airlines is expected to play a central role in improving connectivity, which officials say could unlock trade, tourism and logistics opportunities between the two countries.

Beyond aviation, the talks explored collaboration in infrastructure development, artificial intelligence, defence and security, signalling a broadening partnership that goes beyond traditional diplomacy.

Economist Salvador Raisse says the outcomes point to a strategic shift by Mozambique to strengthen regional partnerships and drive economic growth through intra-African co-operation.
