The trial of co-accused linked to Malawian preacher Shepherd Bushiri is set to begin in the High Court in Pretoria South Africa (SA) on Monday, after a court dismissed an attempt to block the prosecution.
The High Court found no merit in an application by businessman Willah Mudolo and five others, who were trying to stop the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) from charging them with racketeering.
Mudolo is a key co-accused in a wider case involving alleged theft and money laundering linked to Bushiri’s church operations and a commodities trading platform.
Bushiri and his wife Mary fled SA in 2023, while proceedings continue against those still facing trial in the country.
Mudolo, his wife Zethu Matshingana-Mudolo, and their company Rising Estate are among those accused. They face multiple charges including racketeering, fraud and money laundering.
The case has seen several legal challenges, including attempts to overturn arrest warrants, challenge prosecution authorisations, and remove state prosecutors, all of which have now been dismissed.
The NPA has welcomed the ruling, saying it clears the way for the trial to proceed.
