IEC of South Africa says it will intensify efforts to get more eligible voters registered

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa (SA) says it will intensify efforts to get more eligible voters registered ahead of the country’s upcoming local government elections.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that the polls will take place on November 4, setting the stage for a nationwide voter mobilisation campaign.

The IEC is urging citizens to register in the ward where they live, stressing that voters will not be allowed to cast their ballots outside their designated voting districts.

Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Sheburi says the commission will roll out its election campaign later this month, with a strong focus on rebuilding public trust in the democratic process.

“At the heart of the campaign is an effort to rekindle belief in democracy as the preferred way of managing public affairs,” Sheburi said.

He acknowledged growing disillusionment among some voters, but emphasised that participation remains key, adding that restoring confidence also depends on visible and responsive governance.

The IEC hopes the campaign will encourage more South Africans to register and take part in shaping local leadership through the ballot box.
