Focus on xenophobic attacks

The Government of Ghana has formally petitioned the African Union (AU) to place xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa (SA) on the agenda of the Eighth Mid-Year Co-ordination Meeting.

In a letter to the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Ghana described the matter as one of “urgent continental interest” requiring collective African action.

In the letter, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed deep concern over recurring xenophobic incidents in SA.

He says these incidents they have resulted in loss of life, destruction of property and investments, and growing threats to the safety and well-being of African migrants.
