The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, has indicated that he could consider seeking a third term in office after his current mandate ends in 2028.
Tshisekedi said any move to extend his Presidency would only happen after consulting citizens through a referendum. The country’s current constitution limits Presidents to two terms.
He also warned that future elections may not be held on time because of the worsening security situation in eastern DRC.
The M23 rebel group last year captured large areas of North and South Kivu, including the strategic cities of Goma and Bukavu.
Government forces have been battling the M23 and other armed groups in the east of the country for several years.
