The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (SA) is calling on citizens to reduce their salt intake as part of World Salt Awareness Week.

The organisation says the country has one of the highest salt consumption rates globally.

New data released shows that more than one in three South Africans are living with elevated blood pressure, despite many believing their salt intake is normal.

Chief Executive Officer Prof. Pamela Naidoo says they are now appealing for greater awareness, stronger regulations and improved access to healthier alternatives.

“The tagline is #SaltedOut and Make the Salt Shift. And that’s basically to really try and raise this awareness that your acceptable level of salt intake per day is around 5 grams a day. And unfortunately, globally and in SA, we are exceeding adult , you know, adult consumption of 5 grams a day. It’s actually averaging around 7 to 7.5 at the moment.”
