South Africa’s (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended ongoing talks between power utility Eskom and mining and metals company South32 focused on securing a sustainable long-term electricity supply for the Hillside Aluminium Smelter in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
Addressing guests during the smelter’s 30th anniversary celebrations in Richards Bay, Ramaphosa emphasised the plant’s significant role in the economy. It has been described as the largest aluminium smelter in the southern hemisphere and a key source of employment across the aluminium sector.
He said discussions between the two companies are crucial, bringing more renewable energy into SA’s power grid.
“We commend Eskom for its constructive as well as proactive efforts to work with the industries to address the rise and electricity costs. We welcome this discussion between Eskom and South 32 to find a long-term electricity solution for the hillside aluminium when the current contract comes to an end at a later time. We are encouraged by the commitment of South32 and Eskom to develop energy solutions that support the smelters’ competitiveness and bring renewable energy into the national grid.”
