South Africa (SA) has acknowledged a request by Ghana for a debate at the upcoming African Union (AU) Mid-Year Coordination Summit set for June 24 in Cairo, Egypt.
Ghana has called for the discussion under the topic “xenophobic attacks in SA against African nationals”.
The issue comes amid recent protests in parts of Johannesburg, where civic groups demonstrated against illegal immigration.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned any form of violence or lawlessness, while stressing the importance of maintaining strong relations and solidarity between SA and other African countries.
SA government says it is now reviewing its immigration policy framework as part of efforts to address growing tensions linked to migration and public concerns.
