The Presidency in South Africa (SA) says President Cyril Ramaphosa respects the judgment delivered by the Constitutional Court in a case brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) over Section 89 impeachment proceedings linked to the Phala Phala controversy.

In a statement released on Friday, the Presidency said Ramaphosa remains committed to the Constitution, the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.

The case centred on the National Assembly’s handling of proceedings related to allegations arising from the burglary at the President’s Phala Phala farm in Limpopo. The EFF had challenged Parliament’s decision regarding the Section 89 process, which deals with the possible removal of a president from office.

The Presidency said Ramaphosa has consistently cooperated with various investigations and inquiries into the matter.

“Ramaphosa has been consistent in providing his full assistance to the various enquiries into this matter,” the statement said.

It added that Ramaphosa maintains that no individual is above the law and that all allegations should be subjected to proper legal processes without fear or favour.

The Presidency also urged South Africans to respect the Constitutional Court ruling and the country’s judicial institutions.
