Chief Executive Officer at South Africa’s (SA) Life Healthcare, Peter Wartoon-Hood, says nursing jobs will survive Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
He was speaking at a panel discussion ahead of International Nurses Day, which is marked on May 12 annually.
Life Healthcare is one of the largest hospital groups in SA, hosted a media panel discussion under the theme: “The Power Behind Care, focused on the evolving role of nurses and the sustainability of healthcare delivery in SA.”
Like most African states, the Southern African nation is facing not only a nursing shortage, but a growing gap between the care that is delivered and how that care is understood by patients.
The role of nurses can never be overstated as they sit at the centre of this divide.
They are not only responsible for delivering care, but for translating, interpreting and humanising it.
With the advent of technology some jobs might fade as they are replaced by a robot.
Wartoon-Hood says a robot won’t be able to perform a human’s job and therefore the profession is safe.
