South Africa (SA) is moving closer to becoming a continental vaccine manufacturing hub following a major investment announcement welcomed by cabinet of a $1.5 billion funding package from the European Investment Bank Group for BioVac’s new vaccine production facility in Cape Town, Western Cape.
The plant, expected to be completed by 2028, will become Africa’s first end-to-end multi-vaccine production site, producing vaccines for cholera, polio, pneumonia and meningitis.
SA’s Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni confirmed the development during a post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday.
SA’s drive to strengthen local vaccine production has received a major boost following a $1.5 billion financing package from the European Investment Bank Group for BioVac to establish Africa’s first end-to-end multi-vaccine production plant in Cape Town.
The facility is expected to produce oral Corona vaccines by 2028, before expanding to include vaccines for polio, pneumonia and meningitis.
