A new opposition coalition in Togo has held its first authorised public rally in more than a year, in what analysts say could signal a shift in the country’s political climate.
The gathering took place in Lomé and brought together several opposition groups, including the ANC, FDR, ADDI, PSR and the citizen movement Togo Debout.
It was the first public demonstration officially authorised since the introduction of Togo’s Fifth Republic last year. No violence or major incidents were reported during the event, which was held at the Akassimé grounds.
Ahead of the rally, the country’s territorial administration ministry instructed local authorities to ensure the meeting proceeded peacefully.
Members of the newly formed opposition platform, known as the Cadre national de concertation pour le changement au Togo (CNCC), used the gathering to call for political reforms and greater democratic space.
Togolese journalist and political analyst Joachim Agbetim said the peaceful nature of the rally was significant.
“This is an important moment for the opposition because it shows there is still room for political expression and public mobilisation in Togo, even if challenges remain,” Agbetim said.
He added that the coalition appeared determined to project unity and optimism as it seeks to rebuild public confidence and strengthen its political influence.
