Several opposition parties in Burundi have suspended their participation in preparations for the country’s 2027 presidential election, citing concerns over the credibility of the electoral process.

Five political parties, including the CNL, UPRONA, CODEBU, FRODEBU and CDP, boycotted a meeting organised by Burundi’s Independent National Electoral Commission on preparations for the vote.

The parties accuse the electoral commission of ignoring alleged irregularities reported during the 2025 legislative, communal and local elections.

The opposition says its decision reflects growing frustration over what it describes as a lack of transparency and accountability in the handling of previous elections.

Speaking on the matter, Aimé Magera, the international representative of the opposition party CNL, said the group could not continue participating in a process it believes lacks credibility.

“We cannot take part in discussions about future elections while concerns raised about previous polls remain unresolved,” Magera said.

He added that the opposition wanted guarantees of a fair and transparent electoral process before rejoining talks with the electoral commission.
