About 17 people have died as a result of severe weather conditions

Acting Head of the National Disaster Management Centre, Thabo Khupari, says the extreme weather marked by heavy rain, flooding and strong winds has caused widespread destruction across multiple provinces.

The Western and Eastern Cape Province among the hardest hit, with extensive damage to homes, roads and other critical infrastructure.

Khupari says disaster management teams are working closely with business partners and non-governmental organisations to provide much needed relief, including psychosocial support, food parcels, blankets and other humanitarian assistance to affected communities.
