Mozambique is facing one of the most severe humanitarian and climate crises in sub-Saharan Africa

Mozambique is facing one of the most severe humanitarian and climate crises in sub-Saharan Africa after recording the continent’s highest number of internally displaced people caused by natural disasters in 2025, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre.

Successive cyclones, floods and armed conflict, particularly in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, have forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes, worsening social and economic hardships in a country already struggling with multiple crises.

Authorities say the damage caused by the disasters is estimated to be worth billions of dollars and have stressed the urgent need for investment in climate resilience, reconstruction and the protection of vulnerable communities.

Mozambican social activist and researcher Simão Sebastião said the growing impact of climate change is exposing the country’s deep structural vulnerabilities.

“Mozambique is paying a heavy price for climate disasters while many communities still lack the resources to recover and rebuild,” Sebastião said.

He added that long-term solutions would require stronger disaster preparedness, investment in infrastructure and greater international support to help communities adapt to increasingly extreme weather conditions.
