Ministers responsible for disaster risk management from the SADC are meeting in Masvingo Zimbabwe

Ministers responsible for disaster risk management from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are meeting in Masvingo Zimbabwe today to strengthen regional co-operation in responding to climate-related disasters.

The high-level meeting comes as countries across Southern Africa face increasing threats from floods, droughts, food insecurity and extreme weather conditions linked to climate change.

The Sixth Ordinary Meeting of SADC Ministers Responsible for Disaster Risk Management is focusing on improving disaster preparedness, emergency response and long-term resilience across the region.

South Africa’s Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa is chairing the meeting under the theme: “Building Back Better Together: Advancing Resilient Recovery and Sustainable Development in SADC.”

Regional leaders say climate disasters are becoming more frequent and increasingly interconnected, placing pressure on livelihoods, agriculture, infrastructure and economic growth.

The meeting is expected to adopt resolutions aimed at strengthening early warning systems, humanitarian coordination and proactive disaster management across Southern Africa.
