South Africa’s (SA) Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, says the youth of 1976 stood firm against indoctrination, refusing to be brainwashed by the apartheid regime.
Chikunga was speaking ahead of the official launch of the National Programme to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings, set to take place in Soweto, Gauteng Province.
June 16 remains a defining moment on SA’s calendar, marking the day when thousands of learners courageously took to the streets to oppose the imposition of Bantu Education a system designed to entrench inequality and limit the aspirations of Black South Africans.
The commemoration honours the sacrifices of the youth who helped shape the country’s path to freedom, while renewing the call to address the challenges facing today’s generation.
