Channel Africa marks 60 years of telling African stories

As Channel Africa marks 60 years of telling African stories, shaping conversations, and connecting the continent through radio, the station reflects on the remarkable journey of a station that has mirrored South Africa’s (SA) own transformation.

Established in 1966 as the station began as the apartheid government’s external broadcasting arm, tasked with projecting SA’s image to the world during one of the country’s most contested political periods.

Former Channel Africa producer and presenter Sydney Katunga Phiri says it was an honour to gain experience at the station, adding that its rich history remains one of the best platforms for presenting an African perspective.
He says the station’s diversity and unique identity continue to make it stand out across the continent.
Over the decades, it evolved from a powerful shortwave propaganda tool into a platform committed to African dialogue, development, and democratic engagement.
