Cape Verde is preparing for parliamentary elections on May 17, with voters expected to elect 72 members of the National Assembly in a contest involving five political parties.
Among the parties contesting the elections is the opposition African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), which is campaigning across all electoral constituencies under the slogan “Cape Verde for all”.
The party’s leader, Francisco Carvalho, says the PAICV wants to introduce wide-ranging state reforms focused on improving access to higher education and healthcare.
Carvalho is also proposing an economic diversification strategy aimed at reducing dependence on a single sector by strengthening tourism, agriculture, fishing and the blue economy.
Speaking on the opposition party’s political programme, Vladmir Ferreira said the PAICV believes Cape Verde needs more inclusive economic growth and stronger social support systems.
He said the party’s vision is centred on creating opportunities for all citizens while improving public services and expanding the country’s economic base.
