Former Lesotho Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili has described the death of Botswana’s third President, Festus Mogae, as a major loss not only for Botswana but for the entire African continent.
Mosisili was among several current and former leaders from the Southern African Development Community region who attended Mogae’s funeral service in Gaborone over the weekend.
Mogae, who served as Botswana’s president from 1998 to 2008, has been widely remembered as a respected economist, principled leader and unifier who helped shape Botswana’s democratic and economic success.
Speaking during the funeral proceedings, Mosisili praised Mogae’s leadership and commitment to the African continent.
“His passing is not a loss only to Batswana but to the entire African continent, which he served with such unwavering dedication and humility,” Mosisili said.
He described Mogae as “a statesman of rare vision and integrity” who governed Botswana with prudence and foresight, ensuring that the country’s natural resources benefited its people.
Mogae has received widespread praise for his role in promoting good governance, economic stability and the fight against HIV/AIDS during his Presidency.
