Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has thrown his support behind the proposed East African regional refinery project

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has thrown his support behind the proposed East African regional refinery project following talks with Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote.

The discussions are being seen as a sign of growing momentum towards deeper energy cooperation and industrial integration across East Africa.

Museveni said it made little strategic sense for African countries to continue exporting crude oil while other regions profit from refining and producing finished petroleum products.

He described the proposed refinery project as an important step towards African economic integration, industrialisation and shared prosperity.

He also called for stronger regional co-operation in implementing large-scale infrastructure and energy projects that can benefit citizens across the continent.

The proposed refinery initiative forms part of broader efforts by African governments to strengthen local value addition, reduce dependence on imported fuel products and improve regional energy security.
