The government of Kenya says construction work at the Raila Odinga International Stadium is now 91% complete and will be finalised by the end of July as the country ramps up preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Kenya will jointly host the tournament with Uganda and Tanzania from June 17 to July 19 , 2027.
The 60 000-seat Talanta Sports City stadium and the 48 000-seat Moi International Sports Centre have been selected as Kenya’s main venues for the tournament, while Nyayo National Stadium will serve as an alternative venue.
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports of Kenya, Salim Mvurya said work on the main stadium pitch is progressing well, with grass already planted and additional infrastructure developments remaining on schedule.
“The main stadium going forward, we have already seen they have started doing the pitch. They have planted the seed for the grass and now we are giving it time. In two to three months we should be having a complete pitch,” Mvurya said.
He added that auxiliary works and road network upgrades around the stadium are continuing as planned as Kenya prepares to host Africa’s biggest football tournament.
