The African Union (AU) Peace Fund has convened its first joint retreat at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, bringing together all governance bodies on a single platform following the full operationalisation of its structure.

The meeting, which opened on May 7, is aimed at aligning institutional priorities, strengthening collaboration and improving coordination across oversight and operational bodies involved in the fund.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission, emphasised the central role of stability in development. Youssouf said peace remains essential for progress across the continent.

The retreat marks a milestone for the Peace Fund, which has in recent years focused on strengthening governance systems and expanding partnerships. Kalidou Gadio highlighted progress made, including improvements in fiduciary systems, operational structures and ongoing resource mobilisation to support peace-related initiatives.

Dagmawit Moges, Director of the Peace Fund Secretariat, said the completion of the governance architecture has made it possible to convene all key structures in a coordinated setting. Moges said the retreat reflects a new phase in the fund’s development, bringing together decision-making and operational entities.

Participants include members of the Board of Trustees, Independent Evaluation Group, Executive Management Committee, Fund Managers and the Secretariat. The gathering is designed to create a unified approach to decision-making and programme implementation.

The retreat is also expected to provide strategic direction for the fund as it continues to support peacebuilding efforts across Africa. Organisers said strengthening institutional coherence will be critical to improving the effectiveness of interventions in conflict-affected areas.

The Peace Fund plays a central role in financing AU peace and security activities, with a focus on ensuring sustainable and predictable resources for operations.

The Addis Ababa meeting is expected to enhance collaboration among stakeholders and reinforce efforts to deliver long-term peace and stability across the continent.
